2007: The Year in Review

2007 ended up being kind of a revolutionary year for us.  The idea of a different kind of church planting movement had been in my heart since I was in high school.  The opportunity finally came in 2007 to get this dream started.  Between our friendship with Josh and Stephanie Horvath and Alternative Missions we began to put form to this idea.

In 2007 we started The Movement together.  Through a lot of discussion and prayer we saw that our core values were Community, Social Help and Expression.  These three things have defined our vision for a unique church planting movement.  Here are the things we accomplished in our first 8 months of work together:

-Started our first home church with mostly un-churched young people.
-Began social helps projects which have included hospital visitation, free hugs video, visiting the elderly and feeding the poor.
-Started our band Into the Sea that is 100% missional as we play, organize and promote local concerts in the community of artists in Tepic.
-We added another full-time staff worker in Omar Barragan from Guadalajara.  He also has started a band called Brothers & Sisters.  Omar heads up our record label Indian Summer that we have started together.
-We also have been building relationships with people in Guadalajara and Colima, Mexico and Madrid, Spain who are looking to start house churches with The Movement in their respective cities.
-We established the idea of team leadership instead of hierarchal leadership in The Movement.
-In general we have hosted events, parties and concerts where we have begun the process of sharing the love of Jesus with non-believers in our city
-Nayeli and I had our first child.  This was the most radical experience of the year of course!

We are happy with the beginning of The Movement and our experiences in 2007 but we really believe that we have been setting the foundation for growth in 2008.  Here are some of the things that we hope to accomplish in this new year.

-Expand to more house churches here in Tepic and in Guadalajara, Colima and Spain.
-Weekly visits to hospital, juvenile prison and to terminally ill cancer patients.
-Put on toy drive concert in April to help underprivileged children.
-We will be hosting three short term outreaches this summer in social helps projects and house church meetings here in Tepic.
-Organize large-scale arts festival in June here in Tepic.
-We hope to do a tour with our bands in September.  This would include social helps projects and Movement groups in other parts of Mexico as we played concerts.
-Develop new leaders from people who have recently begun to follow Christ here with us.
-To grow as a team and as a body as we know Christ more and more.

We give thanks for 2007 and look forward to God’s guidance and provision in 2008.  God bless you all!
