I just wanted to share a quick update with you about something that we have been trying to do for a few months now. We have been interested for a while in doing a weekly discussion/Bible study with the inmates of the youth prison here in Tepic. We had met with the director and the social services workers several times. After different discussions and proposals we finally had our first meeting with the inmates yesterday.
I was pretty nervous because I was going to lead the group so it was kind of an intense day. The inmates are in there for a minimum crime of assault with a deadly weapon all the way up to murder. So these are serious cases. They gave us full access to all of the 70 plus young men. We did a half hour discussion with the older group and then the younger group. Our discussion was about “What it Means to be a Man”. We figured that would be a good way to get their attention on our first visit.
The discussion gave us a great chance to talk about the idea that we as men and women are made in the image of God. They were very involved in the talk and I think it definitely got them thinking. We ended by letting them know that they are made in the image of God and they have value, purpose and they are loved. It’s going to be awesome to develop relationships with these young men over the coming months. We really hope to see the Spirit do true transforming work in them.
Please keep these young men in your prayers. God bless you guys!
