I wanted to share a little story with you about a young man that we have recently become friends with here in Tepic. In our last update I shared with you how we had a concert a few weeks ago that we put on. That night we met a group of friends that enjoyed our music. We started talking with them and we ended up inviting them to a movie at our house during the week. A few of those guys came over to the movie and it gave us a chance to talk with them some more. We then invited them to our house church that meets Friday night. One of those guys came…his name is Walter.
Walter showed up and we started talking about life. He shared with me how he had dropped out of school (he’s 16) and now he is unhappy with his life. His family was really struggling financially and he said that he was just angry and frustrated all of the time. He also blatantly said that he did not believe in God. I have heard people say those kinds of things before and wasn’t phased at all. We started talking about the life and message of Jesus Christ and it was a quality conversation. We talked about how God chose to suffer for us because of love. He opened up a little.
Once our meet up started he began to share his thoughts about the Scriptures that we were reading. He was sounding a little more like a believer all of the time. We were talking about how Jesus showed us that God was taking the step toward us instead of the idea that we were searching for him. It was crazy listening to him share his thoughts because he was saying very different things from what he said before. By the end of the night it was time to pray together and he said that his mind had totally cleared and his questions were being answered about Christ. We prayed with him and he was really beaming afterwards.
He also asked for us to pray for him because he needed a job. He wrote us two days later and told us that he had already gotten a job and it was just further evidence that God had been touching his life. Pretty cool!
I wanted to share this with you because most of our evangelism/discipleship has been slow and steady with the people that we have met. There have been definite impact on different people but it has been more gradual through conversations, Bible studies and social helps projects. It was cool to see how God touched Walter in such an intense and quick way. We hope that our concerts will allow us to share Christ with people all of the time over the coming years. That’s definitely the idea of what we hope to do!
I just wanted to share that with you. God bless you!
Andy, Nayeli and Dylan Hackett
PS. Larry Norman passed away a few days ago. That man has blessed me since childhood because my parents always played his music. One of my favorite albums ever is his “In Another Land”. I met him once and shook his hand. I was totally shaking! Thank God for these radicals like him, Keith Green, Bob Dylan and so many others. By the way…our drummer Omar was able to attend a press conference that Bob Dylan on Sunday in Guadalajara. There were about 150 people there and Dylan played 4 songs on his acoustic guitar. Omar was blown away! Afterwards Bob Dylan shook his hand and Omar says that the whole time he was just thinking of how I should have been there. If you ever want to hear a truly beautiful song check out Dylan’s “Every Grain of Sand” from his “Shot of Love” album.
